Translation pricing: how it is calculated

The price of a translation depends on several factors. We explain them one by one, so you know what shapes the quote you receive.

Why there is no single price

Calculating the price of professional translation and related services (DTP, localization) calls for a special approach, because it depends on many variables.

If you send us your document, we will reply with a clear quote, usually on the same business day. For a starting point, see also our packages.

Factors

What influences the price of a translation

The unit of measurement

Pricing differs from one country to another: per word, per hour, per page or per line of text. Our package rates are quoted per word, and a page is 250 words. For non-editable documents (scans, PDF, JPG, PNG), the physical page may be charged.

The minimum fee

For small volumes of text a minimum fee applies, because project management (assessing the text, preparation, checking and delivery) is required regardless of volume. It generally does not apply to recurring collaborations.

Text complexity

Highly technical texts require translators with experience in the field, and specialized translations usually cost more than general ones.

Source and target languages

Language combinations with many available translators cost less than rare ones, for which there are few specialists. We translate from any language into any language.

The delivery deadline

The deadline is set realistically, taking into account project management and the translation itself, which also includes consulting terminology databases.

The volume of text

For recurring documents, a stable partnership brings preferential prices and discounts for large volumes.

How you can estimate the price yourself

For Word documents, take the word count of the document and multiply it by the rate of the package you choose.

The result is approximate and usually higher than the final price, because it does not include discounts. For other file types, request a free quote.

DTP and related services

Frequently asked questions

Questions about pricing

What counts as a page?

A page is 250 words. Forms and standard documents (diplomas, certificates, etc.) and documents containing pictograms or ideograms are invoiced per physical page.

What is the repetitions discount?

Identical segments that appear several times in a file or across several files are charged only once, for example repeated table headers.

What is a translation memory?

Previous translations are stored in bilingual files, and repeated phrases in later projects can be discounted.

Can I use existing translations to pay less?

Yes, if the previous translations are of good quality and the source formatting matches. We then create a translation memory and discount the parts that have already been translated.
